Donut Summit

A couple months ago while I was in Chicago, I remembered seeing a twitter post about a doughnut gathering coming soon in L.A. Before I got too excited I checked the date and realized that I would be back in L.A for it and continued to be excited by such an event. I knew I had to go! Well time flew and the Donut Summit took place this past weekend. I was suppose to go to the Rose Bowl flea market Sunday morning, so I got ready and put on my Mister Donut shirt, not knowing it was donut day  till a few minutes later while checking twitter, I was reminded that it was that day. I ditched the flea market and picked up some donuts from a local donut shop I frequent in Alhambra, King’s Donuts. *side note: (I’ve never even had their donuts, I go there solely for the cream puffs, they are my all time favorite.) Off to Griffith Park  it was , the festivities were to start at 1pm.

I dragged Benjie with me and we arrived at about 1:30 and went straight to the registration table, where we were #36. We got our Donut Summit handbook, which included the ballot to vote. There were different categories to vote in. Benjie’s favorite was best Hertz donut. Then  I filled out  the paper that provides the information of the donut shop and attached it to my pink box and tried to find room on the two tables that were covered in boxes of donuts, even the benches to sit were filled. I found a lil gap to place my box and then went straight to the tasting. Most all the donuts looked the same but the ones that stood out the most were the ones from The Donut Man (Glendora), Stan’s (Westwood), Bob’s (Farmers Market), Spudnuts (Van Nuys),Randy’s (Inglewood), The Fry Girl (L.A)  and BabyCakes NYC. There were donuts from all over the L.A area, about over 40 different shops. I was pretty overwhelmed with all the donuts, but was eager to try as many as possible.

L.A Donut Summit

I was happy to be able to try The Donut Man and Stan’s doughnuts since those are the two which people always rave about. I tried the famous chocolate chip peanut butter donut ,chocolate cinnamon roll and blueberry old fashioned glazed donuts from Stan’s, which were all as yummy as they claim.

Fry Girl Inc. mini donuts were unique fried goodness, especially the Oreo cookie crumb one.

Randy’s Donuts had the best apple fritters.

Another donut shop that caught my attention was Spudnuts, which uses potato flour for the doughnuts. Those were definetley one of my favorites from the day.

The winners are posted on the official L.A Metblogs site . The Donut Man did win Best Overall Donut, so it is worth a visit to Glendora.
